Sometimes it takes me a few listens to get into a band. I can even listen to an entire album, and not really have much to say about it afterwards. With Hot Chip’s “Colours”, the third track from their outstanding new album The Warning, I knew instantly that this might be the best song I have heard in at least 3 years. Actually, that is arbitary. I can’t really think of a song that I was obsessed with this much, ever (not including Arrested Development’s “Mr. Wendel”).
As the song begins, you are greeted with a sweet voice and a slow, vaguely glitchy beat. You don’t think much of this until the 50 second mark, when you are first greeted with the chorus. At this point, you could tell me this was the remix of the new Paul McCartney single. Oh, and the single happens to be the loveliest song Sir Paul has ever written. Once we get through the airy “colours and colours and colours…” of the chorus, we are greeted with an upbeat drum machine that makes you dream of dancing with your long lost crush. Okay, maybe that’s just me. But it is seriously the sweetest, best, dare I even say cutest song EVER.
