Re-Design for the Holidays

Thanksgiving is coming up. I think I should share some music I have been thankful for. But first, let me talk about this re-design. I don’t know. I like cupcakes. They are cute. And I like this layout. I guess that’s all there is to say about it.
I have never been one to celebrate Christmas early, but this year, I am excited for it. It is partly because of a show that is being set up for the Holidays, partly because I have been forced to think about why I like Holidays in general, partly because I have been trying write a Christmas song for a compilation, but also, partly because of the release of Sufjan Stevens’ Box Set: Songs For Christmas.
I really can’t stand most Christmas music, it probably stems from suffering through a month of overkill easy listening Christmas music my mom always put us through as kids. You know it’s a bad sign when you get excited to listen to “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”. In 2004, I came across Sufjan’s Christmas EPs he had released himself online in previous years, and it was a breath of fresh air. A glimmer of hope for music normally so boring and by the numbers ‘pretty’. It feels good to listen to “Christmas music” that, a lot of the time, doesn’t sound any different than “good” music.
Today marks the release of Sufjan’s Songs For Christmas, which is a box set of five EPs, five stickers, extensive liner notes and short stories from Sufjan, an original Christmas essay by Rick Moody, an animated music video and comic strip by Tom Eaton, a songbook with lyric sheets and chord charts, and an original Christmas Family Portrait painting of Santa Sufjan (with wife and kids!) by Jacques Bredy. It only costs $19. That is amazing.
There are a ton of these songs I’d love to post, but I will only do one. You really should look into buying this, I know I am going to get a few of these to give out to people. It really is great.
