To The Stars Through Difficulties

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

When I find myself getting tired of quieter music, or I am just in the mood for something triumphant and wild and beautiful, I play this song, “Flannery’s Coming Home”, by Ad Astra Per Aspera. They are one of the most creative bands I have heard in a long time, and it makes me proud to say they are from Lawrence, KS.

If you don’t like the first half of this song, you have to wait it out at least until you get to the 2:40 mark. Listen from there, and you’ll see the beautiful melodies of this album start to come out in clear fashion. Catapult Calypso is sure to be regarded as one of the best albums of 2006. The piece as a whole goes all over the place musically, but it isn’t distracting, rather it is impressive. No matter what they are playing, it is completly engaging and exciting, and most importantly, it makes me want to keep listening to it. Please check out this song, and if you like it, please be on the lookout for the album, for it is being released on October 3, 2006.

Kinsella

owen/mike kinsella If you have never heard of American Football, or Cap’n Jazz, or Joan of Arc, or especially Owen, you should go to your record store and buy it. All of it. Except for a couple of pretty bad Joan of Arc albums. But the rest, is great.

Owen is Mike Kinsella’s solo project, and he has a new album coming out called At Home With Owen, and it is really, really good. Normally most Owen albums sound like they were recorded at home - and that was good. So when I read a description of this album, and saw it was recorded in multiple studios, I was a little interested. The songs are long, and most have various parts, but it is really beautiful. I can’t wait to buy it when it comes out in September/October (Yeah, it’s called Fall, it happens every year). One of my favorite songs from the new album is called “A Bird In Hand”, and I have posted it below. If you want more Owen MP3’s, you can always go to Polyvinyl’s website, they have tons of MP3’s.

This is one of my favorite artists. A lot of people don’t like it, think it is too dramatic, over the top, but I really like it. Patrick Wolf writes the songs, and plays every instrument on the albums. He is very good. I cannot wait for his next album to come out. This song, “To The Lighthouse”, is from his album Lycanthropy. You should buy that, and the also spectacular Wind in the Wires.

Junior Boys

This song is sexy.

I don’t remember how I first heard about Junior Boys, but at first I hated it, because I thought it sounded really cheesy. It’s not. It’s really good. It reminds me of my old roommate Courtney, and my old friend Anita. This song is one of my favorites from the album Last Exit, which is an extremely good album in general.

This weekend has been fabulous. I went to Auntie Mae’s twice, hung out with good friends, and practiced a lot. We added a practice microphone today. Good idea, huh? Well, I don’t have much else to say, but I don’t want you to forget about my site, so I am asking you a question: what site do you first go to when you get on the internet? Leave the link in the comments.

This is exciting.

I am in a new band, Olympics, and we have been busy. We already have 5 songs, and we plan on making more and more. I haven’t been this excited about music since I played my first show as Aid. I hope we can record soon, and get you, dear reader, some MP3’s to listen to. Until then, please come out to The Ghost Parlor August 9th for our first show ever, with Mt. Gigantic + Hunter Dragon. I am very, very excited for this band, as I have never felt comfortable playing music with anyone until my bandmates and I started playing together.
Excited.

I have been busy with that, but I want to take some time to tell you about a few albums you need to hear:

TaughtMe - Arms As Traps
Blake Henderson writes some of the best songs I have ever heard; their artwork is amazing; he is a genuinely nice person - but live, TaughtMe is incredible. If you missed them at The Dusty Bookshelf, do yourself a favor and order this CD from him and enjoy it.

Xiu Xiu - The Air Force
Jamie Stewart and Caralee McElroy always make interesting albums. Sometimes, I don’t really care for some of the Xiu Xiu stuff, but this album is fantastic. Truly intense in the non-fratboy sense, and emotionally draining in the non-ex sense. It is a beautiful onslaught, and you should listen to it, and buy it when it comes out September 15th.

Then, although I don’t have a full album by this artist, you need to hear Gummerman. I’ve only heard the songs that are on his Myspace, but they are great, he is great. It is one man who writes and plays all of the everything in these songs. They are powerful, and good. I wish I had an MP3 for you, I really dislike Myspace.

Hopefully I will be able to do things like this very often, because I love sharing what I like with you. If you have suggestions for things I should listen to, please comment with them, and I will send you another suggestion in return.
